For years, medical professionals wore the same dreary uniforms without a thought to style or fashion. That is, until veteran fashion designer Kathy Peterson injected new energy into a staid corner of the apparel market with the founding of her company in 2006, koi design LLC (koi) - and struck a chord with fashion-starved medical professionals.
Armed with a design background reaped from her tenure at fashion houses Guess and Carole Little, Peterson designed koi's first collection focused on the medical mainstay: scrubs. First for women in early 2007, koi introduced fresh new designs that became rapid sellers, earning the new brand a passionately loyal following and firmly establishing koi as the "Home of Designer Scrubs™." Fans immediately raved about the flattering fit of the soft, cotton twill clothing, and the fact that they now had stylish options for work that also offered increased functionality.
The success of koi's first women's scrubs collections led Kathy and her team of talented designers to introduce an extensive line for men in 2009. Prior to this, the choices for men's scrubs had been ill-fitting and very limited - in fact, in many cases, apparel specifically for men was unavailable, or was simply categorized as "unisex."
Setting new standards of creativity, style and craftsmanship in the medical apparel niche, koi has grown from a small start-up operation to a multi-million dollar industry player in five short years and, as such, today is featured in more than 1,000 retail locations worldwide. In 2010, to accommodate the continued growing demand for koi scrubs, the company relocated to a new office and warehouse distribution facility in an artistic design district of Santa Monica, Calif.
koi collections cater to an ever-broadening clientele with diverse tastes and preferences. The company continues to expand its offerings, recently partnering with Marc Ecko Enterprises to create the Ecko UNLTD. and Ecko Red designer scrubs collections, launching in spring of 2011. The new lines feature the youthful, cutting-edge styles for which Ecko is known, plus the flattering fit and quality craftsmanship that are the hallmarks of koi.
Kathy Peterson continues to leverage her considerable experience in fashion design to strengthen the koi brand. Her vision for the next phase of growth will include expansions into other accessory products for the medical community and beyond.
koi's commitment to the local community has led to its involvement with multiple charitable organizations, including the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the American Red Cross' Haitian relief efforts.
